The stopping potential is defined as the potential necessary to stop any electron (or, in other words, to stop even the electron with the most kinetic energy) from reaching the other side.

Now, I know that the max kinetic energy of the electrons emitted is

KEmax=hν−eϕem

where ϕem is the work function of the emitter electrode (on the left in the diagram). And my lecturer agrees with that, but he tells us that the stopping potential V0 can be found using

eV0=hν−eϕcol

where ϕcol is the work function of the collector electrode (on the right in the diagram). The emitter and collector electrodes are made from different metals.

What I don't understand is why the stopping potential doesn't depend on the kinetic energy of the emitted electrons.
