2.shear stress

strain is defined as the ratio of the change in configuration to the original configuration of the body
1.longitudinal strain
2. volume strain

Stress and Strain -

  • The restoring force per unit area developed in the body when the body subjected to a deforming force is termed as stress.
  • The magnitude of stress is equal to the magnitude of deforming force applied, but opposite in direction.
  • Magnitude of stress = F/A.
  • SI unit of stress is Nm^{-2} and the Dimensional Formula is [ML^{-1}T²].
  • Strain is the response of stress on a body.
  • It is defined as the amount of deformation divided by the initial length of the material.

Types of stress and strain -

  • The restoring force when a cylinder is streched by two equal forces to it's cross sectional areas is termed as tensile stress.
  • The restoring force when the cylinder is compressed under the applied forces is termed as compressive stress.
  • The change in the length to the original length of the body of cylinder in tensile or compressive stress is termed as longitudinal strain. That is, ∆L/L.
  • The restoring force per unit area when the tangential force is applied parallel to the cross sectional area of cylinder is termed as tangential or shearing stress.
  • The relative displacement of the faces to the length of the cylinder is termed as shearing strain. That is, ∆x/L = tan ∅.
  • The internal restoring force developed when the body is in a fluid is termed as hydraulic stress.
  • The strain produced by the hydraulic pressure is called volume strain. That is, ∆V/V.
