First consider a conventional strength of materials approach. Let’s say we have within a structural member an elliptical hole of major axis 2a with radius of curvature ρ, where ρ is defined as b2a where 2b is the minor axis. Then the stress σtip at the tip of the major axis is

where σ is the far field stress. If a = b, then the ellipse becomes a circle, and the stress concentration factor takes on the familiar value of 3.
When a≫b, the above equation approximates to
σtip=2σaρ−−√
But now suppose we have an infinitely sharp crack. Then the equation above correspondingly predicts an infinite stress at the crack tip. In the framework of strength of materials theory, that would mean any structure with cracks in it should fall apart at the slightest touch. Obviously that isn’t the case. This paradox was subsequently resolved by the stress intensity factor concept, which completely describes the stresses and displacements near a crack tip. The stress intensity factor is a fundamental parameter in the engineering discipline of fracture mechanics, which succeeded in mathematically characterizing the presence of a singularity (that is, a crack) within an elastic body where strength of materials theory fails. Furthermore, the general form of the stress intensity factor expression applies to any arbitrary body with arbitrary crack geometry, the only difference being a geometric parameter that needs to be calculated for each specific instance. (In fact, many of these geometric factors have already been tabulated in handbooks for certain standard cases.)
For me it took a long time to understand the difference between stress concentration factor and stress intensity factor. Adding to the confusion is that both are represented by K. It wasn’t until after I’d completed a graduate class in fracture mechanics and gone through a Ph.D. that included fracture mechanics modeling that I finally realized what the stress intensity factor accomplishes that the stress concentration factor did not
