Define Sublimation with the help of a labeled diagram. Describe in brief an activity to show sublimation of ammonium chloride. Give names of two (2) more substances which show this property of sublimation.
Answers
the process to change a substance directly from solid to gaseous state & gaseous to to solid state.
activity →
take some camphor or ammonium chloride .crush it and put it in a china dish
put an inverted funnel over the china dish .
put a cotton plug on the stem of the funnel.
then heat slowly. it will chnge into gaseous state.
A change of state directly from solid to gas without changing into liquid state is called sublimation.
ACTIVITY
In a China dish , Take a Small amount of the Substance. The dish is covered by a perforated sheet. A glass funnel in the inverted position is placed over the dish so as to cover it. The steam of the funnel is plugged with cotton. The dish is heated from below.
As a result, ammonium chloride undergoes sublimation thereby changing into vapours which pass through the holes or perforations of the perforated sheet. The vapours get cooled in the upper portion of the funnel and change to the solid form. The latter gets deposited on the inner walls of the funnel and can be suitably removed later on. The cotton plug does not allow any vapours of the Substance to escape.
eg for two substances are naphthalene and carbon dioxide
hope this helps you.. :)))
