Sympathy is the understanding of someone’s feelings when they are going through something sad, have had misfortune etc.
Empathy is close to that, although empathy is the general ability to understand the feelings of another.
Compassion is sympathetic pity for when someone is going through something sad or misfortunes, this is almost the same as sympathy.
