A 20 to 50 millimicrons wide gap filled with interstitial fluid between the presynaptic and postsynaptic cells which are not in contact with each other in chemical synapses , is known as SYNAPTIC CLEFT .

  • Synaptic transmission normally takes time of about 0.5 milliseconds.
  • Once the transmission is achieved ,rapid removal of neurotransmitter from synaptic cleft becomes essential for normal functioning of the synapses.
