It represent rank .For example the basic level of classification is species followed by genus family order class Phylum or division in ascending order. The highest level of classification is known as Kingdom .For example all the insect from a taxon. Taxon of class category for bird is a aves and taxon of phylum category for bird is chordata the degree of relationship and degree of similarity varies with the rank of taxon. Individual of a higher rank ,say order or family, are less closely related than those of a lower rank such as genus to species.
