Taxonomic key helps to determine and in identification of various species of plants and animals on the basis of similarities and dissimilarities.

Key is based on set of contrasting characters of species called as couplet. And each statement in a couplet is called as lead.

There are two types of keys :-

1. Indented key:- It has two or more choices of characters of species.

2. Bracketed key:- It is based on the contrasting features for identification and is the most popular key.
