In the beginning of the 12 the century,Oxygen atom was chosen as the standard because oxygen combines with most of the elements found in nature. The mass if an atom of Oxygen found in nature was taken to be 16.000 and 1/16 th the mass of an atom of Oxygen was taken as AMU.
In 1961,IUPAC adopted unified atomic mass unit (u) or Dalton (Da) as a unit of atomic mass.Carbon-12 isotope of Carbon has been chosen as the reference and its atom is assigned a mass of exactly 12 u.
Atomic Mass Unit or simply AMU is one/twelfth of the mass of an atom of Carbon-12.
=1 AMU =Mass of C-12 atom/12.
=Absolute mass of C-12 atom =1.9924 ×10 raise to power -23.
Therefore, 1 AMU =1.9924×10 raise to power -23 g/12.
=1.66 ×10 raise to power-24g.
