Mineral deposit containing combustible substances which is considered to be a fossil fuel. Coal is formed from plants that have been fossilized through oxidation. The end result is a black hard substance that gives off carbon dioxide when burned.

The energy in coal comes from energy that was stored in giant plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago in swamp forests, even before the dinosaurs! When these giant plants and ferns died, they formed layers at the bottom of the swamps. Water and dirt began to pile up on top of the dead plant remains.

Coal was formed from plant remains from plant got buried deep under the earth's curst.Over a large period of time ,the chemical and physical properties of these plant remains were changed through geological actions that led to the creation of the solid substance called coal.
The process,of conversion of dead plant materials into coal,is called carbonisation.
