Atmospheric pressure

  • The pressure due to the Earths atmosphere can be considered as the result of the weight of the air acting on per unit area of the Earth’s surface.

  • The atmospheric pressure is the pressure exerted by the atmosphere on the surface of the Earth as well as all objects on the Earth.

  • At sea level, the atmospheric pressure is about 1.013 x 105 N m-2. This value is usually referred to as 1 atmosphere.

  • Meteorologists express pressure in millibars. One millibar is 100 N m-2 or 100 Pa. Hence, 1 atmosphere is about 1013 millibars.

  • The atmospheric pressure decreases slowly with altitude because the atmosphere becomes thinner at higher altitude. Figure illustrates the decreasing atmospheric pressure with altitude.

2. According to Newton’s universal law of gravitation,

The force of attraction between any two bodies is directly proportional to the product of their masses and is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.

3. Push or pull of an object is considered a force. Push and pull come from the objects interacting with one another. Terms like stretch and squeeze can also be used to denote force.

4. Muscular power is the power applied utilizing portions of the body like arms or legs. It is a force that results because of the action of muscles and is a contact force since there is contact between the surfaces. Muscular force is required whenever the movement of the body occurs. Strolling, lifting, getting up from a seat, crossing a leg, and so on all require muscular force.
