• simile: an expression which describes a person or thing as being similar to someone or something else. For example, the sentences 'She runs like a deer' and 'He's as white as a sheet' contain similes.
• paradox: involves two or more facts or qualities which seem to contradict each other. Examples would be, ‘Your enemy’s friend is your enemy.’ and ‘I am nobody.’
• synecdoche: a figure of speech in which a part is substituted for a whole or a whole for a part, as in ‘fifty head of cattle for fifty cows’, or ‘the army for a soldier’.
• onomatopoeia: refers to the use of words which sound like the noise they refer to. 'hiss', 'buzz', and 'rat-a-tat-tat' are examples of onomatopoeia.
