Question

Define the following

  • (i) Diaphragm
  • (ii) spiracles

Answer

(i) The diaphragm is a thin skeletal muscle that sits at the base of the chest and separates the abdomen from the chest. It contracts and flattens when you inhale. This creates a vacuum effect that pulls air into the lungs. When you exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and the air is pushed out of lungs.

(ii) Spiracles are openings or tiny pores on the surface of some animals, which usually lead to respiratory systems. In cockroach, respiration occurs through spiracles – a small opening on the sides of its body. ... The respiratory organ of cockroach is referred to as tracheae.
