a) Assimilation - The movement of digested food molecules into the cells of the body where they are used is called assimilation. b) Mastication - The process by which food is crushed and ground by teeth is called mastication.

c) Digestion - The process of which food is converted into substances that can be absorbed and assimilated by the body is called digestion.

d) Ingestion - The consumption of a substance by an organism . In animals , it normally is accomplished by taking in a substance through the mouth into the gastrointestinal tract ; such as through eating or drinking is called ingestion.

e) Egestion - The process of discharging undigested or waste material from a cell or organism specifically is called egestion.

f) Peristalsis - It is a series of wave - like muscle contractions that move food through the digested tract is called peristalsis.
