(i) Interstate disparities of poverty can be noticed in India. It means the proportion of poor people is not the same in every state. Recent estimates show that in 20 states and union territories, the poverty ratio is less than the national average.

(ii) On the other hand, poverty is still a serious problem in states like Orissa, Bihar, Assam, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh.

(iii) In comparison, there has been a significant decline in poverty in Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and West Bengal.

1.Interstate disparities in layman’s terms are the proportion of poor people of one particular geographical boundary or State is not the same in other States as well. In other words, the amount of poor people is not the same as other states.

In India, it is recorded that Orissa and Bihar are the two states which are the poorest with poverty ratio of 47 and 43%. There is however a decline in the rate of poverty in the states of Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, West Bengal, Punjab and Haryana
