The component in which solution formation takesplace and which constitutes larger proportion of a solution is called solvent.

e.g.in sugar solution in water, water is a solvent.

In a solution the components which dissolvesand constitutes smaller portion / proportion ofa solution is called solute.

e.g. in sugar solution, sugar is a solute.
