GENETIC DRIFT

Genetic drift (also known as allelic drift or the Sewall Wright effect) is the change in the frequency of an existing gene variant (allele) in a population due to random sampling of organisms. ...

Genetic drift takes place when the occurrence of variant forms of a gene, called alleles, increases and decreases by chance over time.

There are no environmental influences that cause genetic drift to occur.

NATURAL SELECTION

Natural selection is the process where organisms with favorable traits are more likely to reproduce. In doing so, they pass on these traits to the next generation. Over time this process allows organisms to adapt to their environment.
