Unaltered fossils:- Those fossils which are preserved in their original or intact form in ice, arnber etc. are known as unaltered fossils.

Example:- Wooly mammoths found frozen in ice. They are found 25000 years before extinct fossils were found from Siberian region.

Petrified fossils:- It is the process of replacement of organic or of soft parts of dead organisms by deposition of mineral is known as petrification. Here only the hard parts like bones, teeth, shells, and wood etc. get preserved, which are known as petrified fossils. These are the most common types of fossils.

Unaltered fossils

Body fossils may be preserved as either altered remains or unaltered remains. ... Unaltered remains, meaning the fossil retains their original composition, are produced when the organism is preserved in a material that does not allow for bacterial decay, such as in amber, tar, or ice.

⇒Petrified Fossils

Petrified fossils form when minerals replace the structure of an organism. This process, called permineralization, occurs when groundwater solutions saturate the remains of buried plants or animals. As the water evaporates the minerals remain, eventually filling in the spaces left as the organism slowly decays.
