Friction: can be defined as opposing force which come into play when two object are in contact.

There are 2 factors affecting the friction

1) Roughness : it increases friction between the two surface .

Example: A box sliding on a smooth surface will travel a larger distance than compared to a rough surface

2) Normal Reaction: As the normal reaction increases the interlocking between two surfaces in contact increases as they press harder against each other hence friction increases .

Example:it is easy to drag an Empty box then a loaded box because normal action of an Empty box is less than that of loaded box.

It is a misconception frictional force does not depend upon area of contact .

force of friction is what, which opposes the relative motion.
it could be affected by kind of surface it is acting on. Which means it would be less in smooth surface whereas more in an rough surface.
like, try to walk over ice.as player of water makes it bit smooth .It reduces friction and we are unable to walk over it..
