Potential energy:

Potential energy is the energy that is stored in an object due to its position relative to some zero position. An object possesses gravitational potential energy if it is positioned at a height above (or below) the zero height.

A body possess energy not only when it is in motion. When a body is in motion then it has some finite amount of kinetic energy . But when it is not in motion ,the body may possess energy in the form of potential energy .Body can also possess some amount of internal energy . It can be explained as : energy is basically the capability of any body to do work. Suppose , you are sitting ideal in your room , and you suddenly noticed that someone has changed the position of your study table and you want to change it . So you pushed the table and shifted it to a location that suited you. This means you applied some finite force that caused a displacement i.e.. you did some work. So u had the capability to do work ... This implies u had energy in the form of internal energy.

Hope this helps you
