Digestion is the breakdown of large insoluble food molecules into small water-soluble food molecules so that they can be absorbed into the watery blood plasma. In certain organisms, these smaller substances are absorbed through the small intestine into the blood stream.

The digestive processes are ingestion, propulsion, mechanical digestion, chemical digestion, absorption, and defecation. Some chemical digestion occurs in the mouth. Some absorption can occur in the mouth and stomach, for example, alcohol and aspirin.

The major parts of the digestive system:

Salivary glands, Pharynx, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Rectum.

Accessory digestive organs: liver, gallbladder, pancreas.
