The nephron is the basic structural andfunctional unit of the kidney. Its chieffunction is to regulate the concentration of water and soluble substances like sodium salts by filtering the blood, reabsorbing what isneeded and excreting the rest as urine.

Each kidney is made up of thousands of tiny tubules called nephrons. Nephrons are basic filtering units of kidney. Blood at high pressure travels into these tubules by blood capillaries called glomerulus, which are surrounded by a cup shaped capsule called Bowman's capsule.
