It is the transference of pollen grains from the anther of a flower to the stigma of either the same or genetically similar flower, accordingly self-pollination is of two types :-

Autogamy:- In which an inter sexual or perfect flower is pollinated by its own pollen. It is possible only when anther and stigma are close together.

Geitonogamy :- in which pollen grains of one flower are transferred to the stigma of another flower belonging either the same plant or genetically similar plant.

  • This is maintains the parental characters .

  • Plant has no need to produce large amount of pollen grain.

  • Flowers never develop any devices for attracting to insect pollinators.

  • Flowers must be bisexual and both sexes mature at the same time.

  • flowers are bisexual and cleistogamous in exceptional cases, i.e. remain closed.
