Answer:

Earthquake, any sudden shaking of the ground caused by the passage of seismic waves through Earth’s rocks. Seismic waves are produced when some form of energy stored in Earth’s crust is suddenly released, usually when masses of rock straining against one another suddenly fracture and “slip.” Earthquakes occur most often along geologic faults, narrow zones where rock masses move in relation to one another. The major fault lines of the world are located at the fringes of the huge tectonic plates that make up Earth’s crust.

Question

  • Define the term Earthquake. Where do Earthquake occur.

Required Answer :

Earthquakes are sudden tremors felt on the surface of Earth. This takes place due to release of energy, which gets accumulated within earth. This generates seismic waves. Seismic activity or seismicity can be defined as the type and size of the earthquakes and there frequency over a period of time. They are sudden vibrations causes due to the movements in the earth's crust along a line of weakness.

Causes of Earthquakes :

Folding and Faulting.

The tectonic movements within the earth causes changes on the surface of the earth, forming physical features like mountains, plateaus and rift Valleys. The tectonic forces create tension and pressure. When the stress increases along the line of weakness, the rocks breaks and displaced.

Volcanic Eruptions.

The volcanic eruptions are mostly very violent and causes vibrations on earth's crust. Sometimes the vent of a volcano is plugged temporarily. In such cases, there is a sudden explosive eruption which causes tremors in the earth.

Plate Tectonics.

Several plates in the lithosphere move or slide past each other due to convection in the magma in the upper mantel. It results in the subduction of the crust, volcanic activities, mountain building and crustal folding and faulting, along with plate boundaries.

Landslides.

Landslides and avalanches in the mountains regions slso causes earthquakes. Rock falls are responsible fir minor tremors.

Where do Earthquakes occur ?

The scientists call that point the "focus" at which the tension of the earth is released, leading to the occurance of an earthquake. The focus is also called the hypocenter of an earthquake.
