Image distance can be defined as the distance of image formed from the mirror/lens.
Explanation:-
Image distance may be positive or be negative with respect to the area of the imaginary sphere formed by the mirror or lens. In case of lens, you have to take the optical center as the initial distance measuring point ( 0 units) and the image as the final distance measuring point ( x units). If you measure the image distance at the left side of the optical center, you will get a negative distance and towards right is positive. This is same for the mirror too but in place of optical center, put pole. If any doubts, you can ask me.
