The total dipole moment per unit volume is called Polarisation. Since it is more precisely a polarisation vector because inside the unit volume, many dipoles are present with dipole moment which itself is a vector(from -ve charge to +ve charge)…now what will be the direction of polarisation, it fully depends upon the external electrical field applied and whether the molecule is polar or non polar.
