The amount of oxygen dissolved in water, that is required by biological organisms to break down organic material present in water, at a certain temperature and over a given period of time, is known as Biochemical Oxygen Demand or BOD.
Excessive nutrients in water bodies like lakes etc., which causes extremely dense growth of green vegetation in and around the water body, is known as Eutrophication. This may be caused due to water flowing from the land, which brings rich nutrients with it. The excessive growth of plants can result in oxygen depletion of the water body.
