The substances which contain only one kind of atoms are known as elements. Ex- gold, silver, etc. A compound contains two kinds of atoms in a fixed proportion. Ex- water. The constituents of a compound can be separated only by chemical methods. A mixture contains more than one kind of atoms which are not in fixed proportion. The constituents of a mixture can be separated by physical methods.
