The Ganges has 2 types of tributaries: Left-bank tributaries(ex: Ramganga, Gomti, Ghaghara, Gandak, Koshi) and Right-bank tributaries(ex: Yamuna, Tamsa, Son, Brahmaputra)

The Ganges meets Ramganga in Kannauj, the Yamuna in Prayagraj, Tamasa in Mirzapur, Gomti in Varanasi, Ghaghra/Sarayu(River in Ayodhya) in Saran, Son in Patna, Gandaki in Patna, Koshi(also called “Sorrow of Bihar”) in Katihar, and Jamuna in Sunderbans in the region of Bangladesh. There are other minor tributaries too.

The Ganges branches away near Farakka Barrage from its first distributary, the Bhagirathi-Hooghly, which goes on to become the Hooghly River. After entering Bangladesh, the main branch of the Ganges river is known as the Padma. The Padma meets the Jamuna River( the largest distributary of the Brahmaputra). Further downstream, the Padma is merged into the Meghna river.

Tributary is a freshwater stream that feeds into a larger stream or river. The larger, or parent, river is called the mainstem. The point where a tributary meets the mainstem is called the confluence. Tributaries, also called affluents, do not flow directly into the ocean.
