A thematic map is a map that emphasizes a particular theme or a special topic such as the average distribution of rainfall in an area. They are different from general reference maps because they do not just show natural features like rivers, cities, political subdivisions and highways.
For example, a map showing the religious affiliation of a particular County provides great insight into the culture of that community. Other examples would be ethnic origin i.e. counties with large Hispanic or Asian populations more counties with a large African-American community. Again, needs thematic maps can be used for a variety of purposes including social media market.
