In engineering, the thermite process is used to weld railway tracks together. A mixture of aluminium grit and iron(II, III) oxide is added to the apparatus and lit with an ignition rod. Liquid iron and aluminium oxide form in a very exothermic reaction .

  • Thermite is a pyrotechnic composition of metal powder and metal oxide. When ignited by heat or chemical reaction, thermite undergoes an exothermic reduction-oxidation reaction. Most varieties are not explosive, but can create brief bursts of heat and high temperature in a small area.
