Tissue is a group of cells that have similar structure and that function together as a unit. A nonliving material, called the intercellular matrix, fills the spaces between the cells. There are four main tissue types in the body: epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous. A group or layer of cells that perform specific functions. For example, muscle tissue is a group of muscle cells. A group of cells which is meant to perform a specific function is called tissue. Simple tissues are composed of similar cells, while complex tissues are composed of different types of cells.
