define total internal reflection and explain the applications in it
Answers
Answer : Total internal reflection (TIR): The phenomenon in which a ray of light travelling at an angle of incidence greater than critical anglefrom denser to rarer medium is called TIR.
APLLICATIONS ARE :
1). Sparkling of diamond : It is due to TIR as faces of diamond are so cut that light enters at angle greater than critical angle and suffers TIR repeatedly hence diamond sparkles.
2). Mirage: It is observed in desserts. Light coming from trees bends away from the normal . At a particular layer when i>critical angle then TIR takes place. the rays after TIR reach the eyes and he finds the inverted image of tree as is formed in pond of water.
