For total internal reflection to occur, two conditions must be met: The index of refraction must decrease across the boundary in the direction of light refraction. ... The light is in the more dense medium and approaching the less dense medium. the angle of incidence is greater than the so-called critical angle.Jul 26, 2018

Total internal reflection

“ When light travels from a denser medium to rarer medium, if the incident angle is greater than critical angle, the light gets reflected into the same medium”

Conditions for TIR

(i) Light must pass from optically denser medium to rarer medium

(ii) Incident angle in the denser medium must be more than critical angle

TIR is responsible for brilliance of diamond, optical fibres etc.
