Tourism is a collection of activities, services and industries which deliver a travel experience comprising transportation, accommodation, eating and drinking establishments, retail shops, entertainment businesses and other hospitality services provided for individuals or groups traveling away from home.

Tourism is the most effective means of satisfying recreational needs; combining a variety of recreational activities, it fulfillssuch goals as the recovery of health, enrichment of knowledge, and restoration of one’s productive capacity. Tourismcontributes to health maintenance, physical education, and the intellectual, cultural, and social development of the individual.

According to worldwide criteria used in estimating the scope of the tourist movement, the term “tourist” applies to all personswho temporarily and voluntarily change their place of residence for any purpose except to engage in activities for financialreward in such a place of temporary residence. Persons who spend less than 24 hours of their nonworking time in such aplace are considered visitors. In contrast to foreign tourism, which crosses national borders, domestic, or national, tourismconsists of travel within a single country. According to the data of international official tourist agencies, domestic tourism inthe mid-1970’s accounted for 75 to 80 percent of a worldwide total of 700 to 800 million tourists.

International and national tourism are closely interconnected, with each influencing the other, since they are by naturehomogeneous and identically motivated, and since they create a demand for the same basic goods and services; in manycountries, foreign and domestic tourism are based on a common material technology and a common sphere of laborinvestment.

Depending on purpose, the following categories of tours may be distinguished: tours, or excursions, that constitute a learningexperience—such as visiting attractive places and viewing cultural, historical, natural, or other notable sights; sports tours—involving participation in sports events; amateur sports or hobby tours—for such activities as hunting and fishing; local tripsout of the city (in Russian, “suburban tourism”)—mass excursions of short duration by large organized groups, small groups, and individuals, including trips to special rest areas; socially oriented tours—with participation in public activities; businesstrips—undertaken for professional reasons; and religious tours—for the purpose of visiting places that are considered holy.

In the practice of international statistics, tourism includes trips to health and vacation resorts and trips taken to visit relativesand friends or to attend fairs or congresses. As a rule, tourists pursue more than one goal—combining, for example, a trip toa health resort with sightseeing; the goal that is dominant will determine the tourist’s choice of itinerary, time of year, durationof the journey, means of travel, type of accommodation (for example, hotel, tourist center, or tent), and such other decisionsas whether to travel singly or with one’s family, to join a group, to provide one’s own camping gear, or to make use of self-service facilities. The goals and type of trip, in their turn, are determined by the tourist’s material circumstances, state ofhealth, age, occupation, and cultural level, as well as by such factors as the material technology on which tourism is basedand the extent of available public support (payments and subsidies from public and private funds, for example, or the specialrates granted to tourists and tourist organizations).

A distinction is commonly drawn between organized tours, which follow a program drawn up by a tourist agency and whichinclude the provision of given services, and individually planned trips, in which the tourist works out his own program and—toa greater or lesser extent—makes his own arrangements for services.

TOURISM

Tourism is travel for pleasure or business; also the theory and practice of touring, the business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists, and the business of operating tours.[1] Tourism may be international, or within the traveller's country. The World Tourism Organization defines tourism more generally, in terms which go "beyond the common perception of tourism as being limited to holiday activity only", as people "traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes".[2]

Tourism can be domestic or international, and international tourism has both incoming and outgoing implications on a country's balance of payments. Today, tourism is a major source of income for many countries, and affects the economy of both the source and host countries, in some cases being of vital importance.[3]

Introduction: Tourism is the practice of travelling for pleasure especially on one’s holidays. It is an organized journey during which several places are visited.

Importance of Tourism

Tourism is one of the major source of foreign exchange. Tourism is not merely a business for providing pleasure and rest. It has now grown into a big industry. Every year thousands of foreigners come to India as a result of which we earn a lot of foreign exchange.

Tourism Industry creates employment and contributes towards improving the economy. Tourism has caused the growth of travel agencies and tour operators, establishment of hotels and guest houses, restaurants and eating houses, making of luxury coaches and vehicles, and introduction of super-luxury trains and airways. It has also encouraged the revival and modernization. Of many small-scale cottage industries whose artisans and craftsmen have now flooded the market with innumerable gift items and curios. It its own way tourism is thus trying to solve a part of our vast unemployment problem.

Tours and holidays are the necessities of modern busy life. Gone are our peaceful and leisurely ways of life. Instead we have now to lead a busy and hurried life. in our daily life, we have to work very hard while discharging our duties and responsibilities. We also have to respond to various calls coming from home and outside. After performing all these we feel very tired and find that all our strength and energy has drained out. If it continues for a long time we fall a prey to complex physical and mental illness. Now nothing can replenish our lost energy so quickly and comfortably as tourism. We realize that the benefits of tourism are much more than what we pay for it.

Motives/Purposes behind of Tourism

Tourism serves some purposes such as:

1. It causes us to go to near or distant places, to see things with our eyes, and to fulfill our curiosity.

2. It satisfies our hunger for natural-beauty. A beautiful mountain scene, a lovely beach, or an exquisite sculptural work, casts an irresistible charm on our mind, and tourism lets us enjoy it to the full.

3. It makes us tolerant and broadminded so as to appreciate different people, their speech and dress, their manners and customs, their social and economic conditions.

4. It encourages intercultural contacts and intercultural activities.
