A tournament is a competition involving a relatively large number of competitors, all participating in a sport or game. Such tournaments allow large numbers to compete against each other in spite of the restriction on numbers in a single match

types of tournaments

Single-elimination tournaments. Contestants will meet players, and the people losing will get eliminated from the tournament. The NBA Play-offs, the second phase of the Champion’s League, and others, are examples of single-elimination tournaments.

Double-elimination tournaments. There’s not one, but 2 brackets. The first one (Upper Bracket) is shaped just like a single-elimination bracket. The second one (Lower Bracket) only has the people who lost one match in it. If you lose a match in Lower Bracket, you’re eliminated from the tournament, since you have to lose twice. It’s used by Table Football, Contract Bridge, and other competitions.
