any of the set of metallic elements occupying a central block (Groups IVB–VIII, IB, and IIB, or 4–12) in the periodic table, e.g. iron, manganese, chromium, and copper. Chemically they show variable valency and a strong tendency to form coordination compounds, and many of their compounds are coloured.

1) All those elements which consist of two electrons in their outermost electron shell, are called transition elements.
2) These elements are mostly found in d and f block while f bloch chieflh contains inner transition elements.
3) Transition elements are considered as metals due to the tendoncy to loose electrons.
4) Transition elements show +2 oxidation state.
