In photography, a tripod is used to stabilize and elevate a camera, a flash unit, or other photographic equipment. All photographic tripods have three legs and a mounting head to couple with a camera. The mounting head usually includes a thumbscrew that mates to a female threaded receptacle on the camera, as well as a mechanism to be able to rotate and tilt the camera when it is mounted on the tripod. Tripod legs are usually made to telescope, in order to save space when not in use. Tripods are usually made from aluminum, carbon fiber, steel, wood or plastic.

Answer:

A tripod is a three legged device to hold your camera still. This is useful at lower shutter speeds to prevent the shake of your hands or the action of pressing the shutter from blurring the image, what we call camera shake for short.

Modern lenses and cameras have mechanisms to try and avoid this kind of blurring, but there are times when the tripod is best. Ever see those pictures of waterfalls where the water is a silky blur? Those require a tripod, as you need to have the shutter open for a second or more (probably also need a neutral density filter too).

I prefer tripod for any still life shooting. If you decide to invest, buy a good one, most people buy a cheap one that they end up throwing away before they buy a good one.

Invest in a device to remotely trigger your shutter - to further eliminate camera shake and allow yourself to do a self portrait.
