The number of steps an organism is from the start of the chain is a measure of its trophic level. Food chains start at trophic level 1 with primary producers such as plants, move to herbivores at level 2, predators at level 3 and typically finish with carnivores or apex predators at level 4 or 5.

Food chain is a series of organisms that eat organisms to obtain their food needs.

The tropical level is the number of level it is from the beginning of the chain considering the food choice or preference like plant based food or animal food.

The tropical level includes the producers like plant at the base level, then primary consumers, which eat plant are present at the first trophic level, the primary consumers are consumed by the secondary consumers, which are carnivores. The secondary consumers are placed at second trophic level. The secondary consumers are consumed by tertiary consumers or carnivores.  The tertiary consumers are consumed by the top carnivores, which are called quaternary consumers. The quaternary consumer are present at the top of the trophic level.
