Tubal ligation or tubectomy is a surgical procedure for sterilization in which a woman's fallopian tubes are clamped and block and sealed, either of which prevents eggs from reaching the uterus for implantation. Tubal ligation is considered a permanent method of sterilization and birth control.

- Tubal ligation (also known as tubal sterilization ) is a type of birth control. It is commonly referred to as “getting your tubes tied.” It is a surgery that keeps a woman from getting pregnant. It closes off her fallopian tubes.
- These tubes carry an egg from the ovary to the uterus each month. Sperm swim up the fallopian tubes to join with the egg, resulting in pregnancy. When the tubes are closed, the egg and sperm cannot reach each other. This prevents pregnancy.
- Tubal ligation is a permanent form of birth control. It is one of the most effective options for preventing pregnancy. But it is difficult to reverse. It doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
