Lung capacities and lung volumes- the volume of air present in the lungs during different phases of respiration.
Explanation:
Lung volumes-
1. Tidal volume (TV)- The total volume of air that is inhaled or exhaled during respiration at rest. TV- 500 mL in a healthy person.
2. Inspiratory reserve volume (IRV)- It is the additional volume of air that can be inhaled by force after tidal inhalation. IRV- 3,000 mL in men; 2,000 mL in women.
3. Expiratory reserve volume (ERV)- It is the additional volume of air that can be exhaled by force after tidal exhalation. ERV- 1200 mL in men; 700 mL in women.
4. Residual volume (RV)- It is the volume of air left in the lungs post an ERV. RV- 1200 mL in men and women.
Lung capacity-
5. Inspiratory capacity (IC)- It is the total amount of air that can be inspired by the lungs. IC = TV + IRV (3500 mL).
6. Expiratory capacity (EC)- It is the total amount of air that can be expired after inspiration by the lungs. EC = TV + ERV.
7. Functional Residual Capacity (FRC)- It is the total amount of air in the lungs after exhalation. It is present in the bronchi, bronchioles, and outside the alveoli. FRC = ERV + RV (2400 mL).
8. Vital capacity (VC)- It is the total amount of air that can be exhaled from the lungs after maximum inspiration. VC = TV + IRV + ERV (4800 mL).
