Data i.e. facts ,figures used for analysing and making conclusions can primarily be classified as Numerical data and Categorical data.

Numerical data consists of numbers on which arithmetical operations can be performed.

Whereas Categorical data consists of categories. They divide up the variable into distinct groups or categories.example- In an investigation where one of the variable is Gender, male can be represented as 1 and female as 0. Here the numbers assigned to each category are just placeholders. It would not be sensible to perform arithmetical operations on them.

They can further be classified as:

Discrete data- They are count data i.e. they are specific set of numerical data where we can count all the possible outcomes.example- No.of cars a household has,No. of customers in a specific gift shop etc.

Continuous data- They consist of infinite number of values in a given range such as the weight of the students, percentage of marks obtained in maths exam- here it can take any value between 0 and 100 .

It is important to understand the nature of the data before jumping into the conclusions as manytimes continuous data may appear as discrete when rounded to the nearest unit of measurement.

Ordinal data-It consists of categories arranged in a specific order. We all may have encountered questions atleast once on the level of satisfaction any particular service provided us. The categories of such kind of questions are generally based on levels such as very high ,high, medium, low and very low. This is an example of ordinal data.

And last but not the least, Unordered or Simple Categorical data- They consist of categories without any inherent ordering such as questions like Do you like spicy food or sweets?

I hope this helped.:)
