Farming is practised in various ways across the world. Depending upon the geographical conditions, demand of produce, labour and level of technology, farming can be classified into two main types. These are subsistence farming and commercial farming.

• Commercial agriculture: This style of farming tries to produce crops and animals for sale in the commercial market. A considerable amount of land is necessary for commercial farming.

• Dry farming: Dryland farming is another name for dry farming. It uses the most water in the soil and does not have an extra source of water. In dryland farming, soil moisture is minimal.

• Shifting agriculture:  Shifting agriculture, also known as shifting cultivation, refers to the practice of growing on a block of land for a certain time before abandoning it. This style of farming is largely done in hilltop regions of North-East India. Crops such as maize, millets, cotton, rice, and others are grown under shifting agriculture.
