There are four types of friction, static friction, rolling friction, sliding friction, and fluid friction. Static friction is friction between two surfaces that aren't moving relatively to each other. Rolling friction is friction between a rolling object and the surface that it is rolling on. Sliding friction is the force that prevents a sliding object from moving. Fluid friction is the resistance to an object's motion through a liquid or gas. When the motion is occurring in a liquid, it is referred to as viscous resistance.
