Specular reflection is defined as light reflected from a smooth surface at a definite angle, whereas diffuse reflection is produced by rough surfaces that tend to reflect light in all directions (as illustrated in Figure 3).

- When a beam of light falls on a smooth surface, the rays of the beam are reflected in a particular direction and remain parallel to each other. This is known as regular reflection.

- Images are formed by the regular reflection only.
- When a beam of light falls on a rough surface, the rays of light are reflected in different direction and are not parallel to each other.

- Light reaches to different corners of the room due to diffused reflection only.
