Ultrasound is not different from "normal" sound in its physical properties, except that humans cannot hear it. Ultrasonic waves are the waves produced by the animals which are not heard by the humans.

It is possible for the bats that they are able to fly at night without colliding with another object. It is due to they produce those ultrasonic waves during their flight. Those waves are obstructed by any other object and they get reflected to the ears of the bat and the bat can fly at night by listening the sound of those waves.
