Charles's Law states that the volume of a given mass of gas varies directly with the absolute temperature of the gas when pressure is kept constant. The absolute temperature is temperature measured with the Kelvin scale.
Charles saw a linear relationship between the volume and temperature of a gas. Extrapolating backwards, he found that the point where a gas would have no volume would be −2730C. Since that's as cold as he thought things could ever get, that originated the idea of absolute zero.
