There are two types of Hydrocarbons.

i) Saturated Hydrocarbons

ii) Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

✡ Saturated Hydrocarbons

A carbon atoms exhibits a characteristic property.It can form a chain of carbon atoms by forming covalent bonds with other carbon atoms.

The Hydrocarbons having only single bonds between carbon atoms that is called Saturated Hydrocarbons.

For example;

Ethan(C_2,H_6) which is (CH_3➖CH_3)

✡ Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

Some Hydrocarbon have a multiple bond between two Carbon atoms.

A multiple bond can be double bond or a triple bond . Hydrocarbons having at least one multiple bond are called Unsaturated Hydrocarbons.

For example;

ethene (H_2C ♒CH_2)

propene (CH_3-CH ♒CH_2)

So,when Hydrocarbons have two or three bonds with other carbon atoms then that Hydrocarbons called an Unsaturated Hydrocarbons.
