Valency

The combining capacity of an atom is known as its valency. The number of bonds that an atom can form as part of a compound is expressed by the valency of the element.

For example, nitrogen forms a number of compounds with hydrogen such as NH3, N2H4, N3H in which nitrogen atoms have valencies of 3, 2 and 1 respectively.

Mole

A mole is defined as the amount of a substance that contains exactly 6.022 X 10²³ elementary entities of the given substance. A mole of a substance is referred to the mass of a substance containing the same number of fundamental units as there are atoms in exactly 12.000 g of 12C.
