Valency is the combining capacity of an atom with another atom. The valency of sulphur is - 2. To gain stability through combining with other elements it can combine in the following ways.

Hydrogen (Valency 1) So the compound formed is H₂S
Zinc (Valency +2) So the compound formed is ZnS
